Felt Snowman Ornament

This is a cute little felt Christmas ornament I made for our ornament exchange one year.

We have a really large family so instead of having a gift exchange, we started an ornament exchange. It's not mandatory so not everyone participates.
It's so wonderful to receive the little gift boxes in the mail containing each homemade ornament. And many of us add other small gifts like specialty coffee or tea, candy, fudge, cookies, jams, bookmarks, or other goodies.

Many family members live out of state but for the ones close to me and who want to make crafts for Christmas we started a Crafting Group. It's a great way to stay in contact with friends and family while enjoying time set aside just for a hobby we love.

This ornament is made of felt and cross stitching thread and is really pretty easy.

What You Need:
  • White or off white felt
  • Orange felt
  • Black buttons
  • Black cross-stitching thread
  • A sheet of 8 ½ by 11 paper

Face and nose pattern and supplies

Directions:
The first step is to draw and cut out a pattern. Using the 8 ½ by 11 paper draw a rectangle shape with rounded corners for the head. Next, draw a long thin carrot shape for the nose. Cut these out, these are your patterns.
Place the paper carrot nose pattern onto the paper head pattern to make sure they are the right size and proportionate.

Sew the carrot nose onto white felt

Now using the pattern cut out 2 white felt pieces for the head. Set one aside.
Using black cross stitching thread, sew 2 black buttons for the eyes onto one of the white felt head pieces.
Now using the paper nose pattern, cut out one orange felt nose.
Using black cross stitching thread, sew the orange nose below the button eyes onto the white felt head piece.

Sew on the button eyes

Using black cross stitching thread, sew X's in a half-circle shape for the mouth.
Now place the remaining white felt head piece against the other head piece, and stitch together, leaving a small opening to add stuffing.
Add just a small amount of stuffing to give your snowman head a little roundness.
Stitch the hole shut.

Finished ornament on the tree

Add a pretty ribbon to the top for hanging. I used black satin ribbon and attached each end to the sides of the snowman head. I also knotted the ends of the ribbon to give it an ear muff look.

Add gift tags

Add a tag if desired. I made my tags by printing the text on cream color paper, cutting into a tag shape, then aging them with a mixture of brewed coffee and tea.

It's the most wonderful time of the year!
