Beach Vacation Ornament

Beach or Vacation Ornament

Here's a cute idea for a last minute ornament or one to commemorate a vacation.

Recently we took a trip to Orlando and St. Augustine, Florida and spent a few days on the beach.

While shopping around St. Augustine's historical downtown I saw similar ornaments like these going for $10.00 to $15.00 a piece!

Mine cost approximately $1.00 a piece for the clear bulb. The sand and shells are free to collect on the beach.

Beach Ornament

What You'll Need:
  • Clean sand from the beach
  • Small shells or other interesting beach items
  • Ribbon or twine
  • Funnel
  • Wire

Putting It Together:

Sift  the sand to make sure it's free of debris.

Sift the sand

Place one bulb into a cup or container to hold it still and upright.
Use a funnel to add the desired amount of sand or fill about 1/3 of the bulb.  Too much sand and the ornament may become too heavy and the cap will come off when you try to hang it.

Add Sand to the bulb

Add small shells and other interesting items found on the beach.  I used a chop stick to move the shells into place after dropping them onto the sand.

Add shells

Place the cap back on the bulb.

Add a piece of decorative ribbon or twine abound the cap.  I added just a few drops of glue to hold the twine in place.

Add twine or ribbon

Use Microsoft Word Doc to create a tag.  On my tag I put the location of our vacation, the name of the beach we were on and the date.
You can also use a Sharpie to write the information on the outside of the bulb.
Use a small piece of wire to fasten the tag to the ornament and for hanging.

Ornament is finished!

Store ornament upright, wrapped in tissue and in a small ornament box.
Now I am thinking of other similar ornaments I can make for past family vacations!

Merry Christmas and wishes for a wonderful New Year!

  2. I purchased them at Micheal's craft store or Jo-Ann Fabric store but I think Walmart or Hobby Lobby has them too.
